Team Homework
We will be running a homework program this year. This is a great way to get the players engaged off the ice and gives them a chance to learn in different fashions. There is a lot of hockey that needs to be learned through repetitions, watching, and doing in addition to everything we are teaching them on the ice and bench. I hope you will join us in encouraging your child to do these exercises on their own this year.
Each (Most) weeks we will be handing out a one page home sheet that includes a Physical, Learning, and Practical section. Each section is there to help highlight a specific topic that the team is lacking. Homework sheets that are handed in complete will be put into a draw for a prize to encourage participation.
Homework
Description of Sections
Physical
Repetitions is the best way for the body to learn a new skill. Some motions in hockey while completely familiar to us are new to the Players body and mind. These repetitions will be used to help ingrain, strengthen, and expand on these skills. There will be 3 reps to complete in the week, this allows for a day off if needed. These skills will also usually be skills that the player can continue to do throughout the season and hockey career to enhance their hockey skills.
Parents please initial once the child has completed.
Learning
YouTube videos allow the Player to see a skill and hear it being taught and do it at their own pace. For some kids the best way that they can learn is to watch. Also, as YouTube does, these videos lead off into other videos on the topic and you may find that a skill your child is interested in learning leads them through a number of videos to help them get a better understanding to use on the ice.
Practical
And rounding out our learning is a practical section. This is where the players have to use memory and reasoning skills to complete an activity. Usually a pencil and paper problem, the players will have to fill in the answers to the questions. The players may find this easy or need the most help, in either case encourage the player to think through the answer so they can gain the skills to do them in split second decisions during a game.
